SELF-LOVE SKINNY DIP FALLS
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” -- Buddha
It’s hot! I can’t think of anything better than heading out to Skinny Dip Falls—a local favorite swimming hole—off the Blueridge Parkway. Sorry clothing required despite the name. Because it’s hot and a crowd of families will be gathering by mid-morning, we left early enough to catch a sunrise.
ISLANDS IN THE CLOUDS
Sometimes nature creates beautiful illusions. Today, ridge tops have become islands in the clouds.
LOOKING GLASS ROCK
The trailhead for Skinny Dip Falls is across from the Looking Glass Rock Overlook at Milepost 417 on the Blue Ridge Parkway—about 30 miles from home. Erosion of the softer rock around this granite block produced the landmark we see today. The name comes from the light reflecting off rainwater or in the winter ice, making it mirror-like—or looking glass.
The trailhead to Skinny Dip Falls isn’t marked, but you know you are headed in the right direction if you pass the “Dragon Tree.” Some say this was a Cherokee trail marker.
The trail descends through luscious green woods, still blooming with Rhodendron.
SKINNY DIP FALLS
The dogs and I clambered up the rocks on the far side of the falls—well as far as I was comfortable. There I sat on a rock while the dogs splish-splashed in the pool at my feet. One of the things that makes this waterfall so refreshing is how the water tumbles over rocks creating little pools to play in.
On the way back, we went down to the stream. It was another opportunity for the dogs to enjoy the water and for me to sit on a rock.
Sitting on a rock by a waterfall is relaxing. It often provides me with insight from the Universe on what all of us need to know now. Today’s message: Now time for self-love! Take care of yourself. Don’t fall into doubt. Know that you are loved. The arms of the Universe surround you. They wrap around you to hug and encourage you. You are deeply loved.
As an act of self-love, tonight, I’m going to treat myself to a dinner delivered from one of my favorite local restaurants and a movie. What are you doing to show yourself, love?
